I was writing something about railways yesterday, and thinking how important they are in the Chalet School books :D . Sometimes they're used to set the scene and let us learn more about a new character, and sometimes - e.g. Madge and Jem's first meeting, Peggy & co getting on the wrong train, Grizel going to Schaffhausen, Joey randomly acquiring another child - they're fundamental to the plot. They also show some of the cultural changes: Jacynth is expected to travel a long distance with several changes by herself, but Gisela is not even allowed to travel from the suburbs to the city centre without a chaperone.

Which journeys would feature in a Great Railway Journeys of the Chalet School programme :D ?

I'd nominate the one at the beginning of Redheads, which wouldn't be out of place in an adult thriller: Copper's stepfather giving her covert orders that she must use her birth name of Flavia Ansell, she will seldom hear from him, she must have her distinctive long red hair cut short, and she must forget his existence as far as possible. No explanation is given, and despite their being close, she has to leave the train at Besançon without looking at or saying goodbye to him.

But yes, plenty to choose from - I'd guess that the best-loved ones are Madge, Jo and Grizel's initial journey out to Tyrol, and the episode where Maynie, Jo and Robin meet the Stuffer and Maria.

What about The Highland Twins travelling in full fig in wartime? That's quite a journey.

The girls they meet on the train - I forget whether they're WRNS or ATS - are interesting, as well. There are all sorts of minor characters on railway journeys - the Stuffer, Maria, and the professor who's obsessed with fresh air, Frau Berlin, "Grandma" Learoyd and her family, the beatniks whom Joey slags off, James H Kettlewell, Nell Randolph and her cousin ... I'm sure there must be others!

I think those girls on the train in Highland Twins are WRAFs - don't they say something to Shiena like 'join us and help make history' (the RAF being the newest of the three main branches of the military)? OK, checked the book, and they're actually WAAFs, the WW2 forerunner of the WRAFs. Yes, that's a brilliantly described train journey.

Since that was cut out of the paperbacks, I wondered for a long time who "the Stuffer and Maria" were - until I discovered the GGBP books. They are randomly mentioned in other paperbacks - e.g. Jo hands over a silver service (which she received from them as a wedding present) to be raffled in one of the later Sales. But their introduction to the readers disappeared from the Armada series.

The one it's really surprising they don't do is the journey up the Jungfrau. The trains were running all the way up to the Jungfraujoch as early as 1912 so it's amazing EBD never actually included it.

In Genius, Nina and Sir Guy Rutherford meeting Mary-Lou's mates on a train on the way to England. It's a really lovely scene and it's what later gives Sir Guy the idea to send Nina to the CS.
