Out of boredom yesterday, I ended up making a playlist of carols that have been featured in various CS Christmas plays/concerts. Not all of them are on Spotify, but a lot are, including the more obscure ones. I found a lovely version of The Boar's Head Carol by Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span.

Link here.

Not having a Spotify account, I can't listen to the list but reading it was interesting in itself.

As has been discussed several times, that version of "Torches" can't be EBD's.

Tempus Adest Floridum is interesting in that it isn't actually a Christmas carol - it's a Spring carol - although the tune tends to be more familiar these days as belonging to a Christmas carol.

Lovely, thanks! I’ve subscribed :D

ETA: I’ve been playing it in the background and it’s a lovely list. Part of me wants to select by assorted pageants, but I’m just enjoying shuffle play.

Thanks for creating and sharing this!

Have really enjoyed reading the list, even without hearing them. Thanks for taking the time to put it together, Lottie. I'm not currently a subscriber, but could be tempted! :)

I wasn't 100% sure about Torches, because it's quite an obscure one. Apparently it's based on a Galician carol. I also wonder how many of those songs were the same songs but with different names, e.g. On Christmas Day in the Morning aka I Saw Three Ships.

I think Tempus Ad Est Florium was used as the melody for the carol in Exploits? Not sure though.

If you haven't got Spotify, I'll post some links, although they're not all the same people as the ones on my playlist. Most of them are choral (sorry for Cambridge bias, my parents live there and they always go to see the King's College choir), though there's a couple of solo and contemporary arrangements.
A Little Child on the Earth Has Been Born (Clare's College Cambridge choir)
Adeste Fideles (Enya)
All Poor Men and Humble (Victoria Scholars)
Angelus ad Virginem (St Paul's Cathedral choir)

The Boar's Head Carol (Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band)
Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning (St Thomas Choir of Men and Boys)

The Cherry Tree Carol (King's College choir)
Congaudeat Turba Fidelium (Utopia Chamber Choir)
Coventry Carol (King's College Cambridge choir)

Dans Cette Étable (Les Prêtres)

Ein Kindlein in der Wiegen (Singer Pur)

Faisons Réjouissance (Chorale Fédérale de Scoutisme Français de Paris)
The First Nowell (King's College Cambridge choir)

Good Christian Men, Rejoice (Cambridge Singers)

Hajej, Nynej, Ježíšku (not sure who the singers are)

I Saw Three Ships / On Christmas Day in the Morning (King's College Cambridge choir)
Ich weiss ein lieblich Engelspiel (Münchener Bach-Chor)
In Dulce Jubilo (Medieval Baebes)
In the Fields With Their Flocks Abiding (Lorie Line)

King Herod and the Cock (Magpie Lane, though I prefer the version on Spotify, it's by a kids' choir)

Lord/King Jesus Hath a Garden (Clare's College Cambridge choir)
Love Came Down at Christmas (King's College Cambridge choir)

O Jesulein süss, O Jesulein mild (Chant Claire Chamber Choir)
Out of Your Sleep, Arise and Wake (King's College Cambridge choir)

Patapan (Mindy Gledhill)
Puer Natus in Bethlehem (Capella de la Torre)

Quem Pastores Laudavere (King's College Cambridge choir)
Quoi Ma Voisine? (La Chavanée)

Rocking (not sure who this is)

Sleep, Holy Babe (Eileen Farrell)
Sleep, My Saviour, Sleep (Isobel Baillie/Liverpool Phil)
Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht (Dresdner Kreuzchor)

Tempus adest Floridum (Utopia Chamber Choir)
Three Kings Are Here (Wakefield Cathedral Choir)
Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar (Bolton School choir)
Torches (King's College Cambridge choir)
Tyrley Tyrlow (Allegri Singers)

Le Vermeil du Soleil (Oxford Girls' Choir)
Voisin, D'Où Venait Ce Grand Bruit? (Ensemble Vocal Le Petit Sablon)

Thank you for that! I've really been enjoying it.

Edited, a couple of weeks later,
to add that my husband really enjoyed it, too, when I played it in our motor home on the way home from the Christmas markets in Strasbourg.

Happy Christmas, everybody!

Not quite that one Lotte but my mother sang me to sleep every night with Hajej, muj andilku.

Hajej nynjej is known in English as the Rocking Carol (Little Jesus, sweetly sleep, do not stir....) I think many of us will have grown up to that :)

Thank you...I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this, whilst baking mince pies! It was a brilliant idea.
