'I always wondered about Uncle Ted's work in Russia,' commented Joey to Madge, when they were discussing the Kremlin's attempts at election fraud.

Madge nodded, privately resolving to ask Jem a few searching questions when he came home for dinner!

"Afrikaans?" said Jem, "no, I've never been to South Africa. I bought a Teach yourself Afrikaans
a few years ago in a special BOGOFF offer along with some thriller or other."

The adults stood around Joey's bed where she lay, pale and still. Suddenly the door opened and the Robin marched into the room.

"I have come to sing to Zoey" she announced.

Jem nodded

"It will do no harm" he said to Madge

Robin sat on the bed, took Joey's hand and began to sing

"Let it go! Let it go...............

"I wish I'd thought of that," Joey sulked as everyone discussed the pictures of Beyoncé.

"I love you," murmured Nell.

"Is that you or the gin talking?" asked Hilda with a grin.

Nell looked up. "It's me talking to the gin," she replied.

While Felicity Maynard enjoyed her ballet lessons, by sixteen she had had enough of formality and went off to join Hot Gossip. It was Felix who became a star of the Royal Ballet...

[Hot Gossip were a 1970s/ 80s dance troupe "noted for the risqué nature of their costumes and ...dance routines" (Wikipedia)]

"I don't know why Felix has never married" said Joey, handing round the hot cakes.
"Perhaps he's never met the right woman" Rosalie tried not to drip butter onto her jumper.
"Well, there are lots of really lovely girls in musical theatre" Joey sighed "It's almost as though he's a confirmed bachelor"
"What? Like Charles?"

"Jem!" Madge called. "Are any of your old school pals high up in the judiciary? We've received a court summons for taking Ailie out of school to go to Sybil's wedding."

The Welsh Chalet School had started teaching GCSE and A-Level Arabic as well as the crusades era in history, and in 2008 they organised a school trip to Syria.

After the civil war broke out, they were all shocked by the images of destruction of fascinating places they had visited.

The school launched a campaign to help refugees, especially through the sale, the latest generation of Bettanys (of course Madge et al were gone by then) agreed to take a few on as pupils, and they sometimes prayed for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

(That was rather downbeat, sorry)

Katharine, did you read the article about the Welsh public school that takes refugee pupils for free?

No I didn't read any articles about that, and couldn't find a direct reference, though googling "uk boarding schools take syrian refugees" indicates that some have offered places to them. Link?

I also vaguely wonder how my school (if it had somehow survived) would have reacted to such a crisis, as it had links with various other schools around the world.
