Whereas I read the sentence once, then automatically mentally inserted the missing letter - must be the fruits of too much copy-editing and proofing in my lifetime, I think!!!

A student has just sent me their coursework which includes the above sentence.

Haha! This reminds me of some even filthier coursework a history lecturer friend of mine was marking recently, which included the following:

'Henry VIII's best known warship was the Mary Rose, which was named after his much loved sister. She famously went down during an engagement with some French sailors in 1545'

Imagine Kathie's face if she'd received that!

Brilliant!

My mother (also a history teacher) once received a piece work about King Cnut, but the child had mixed up the spelling somewhat. Mum decided not to comment when she marked it.

The start of term had to be delayed for two days after all the British girls and staff became caught up in the chaos at Dover and Calais. Protests that the girls needed to get to bed on time and repeated references to Sir James Russell and Dr Jack Maynard cut no ice with the French authorities.

French parents were shocked to see that the summer term started on 1st August. Surely, with all their experience, the CS Heads should have realised that the end of July/beginning of August weekend was "cross-over weekend" when all the July holiday-makers headed home and the August holiday-makers headed to the beach and mountains. Over-loaded public transport hardly moved and the roads were even worse.

One weekend in August, after a massive row with Jem about some things centred around the school's move to Switzerland, Jo drove up alone to Snowdonia in order to have a walk and think about stuff. Ignoring the railway, she was surprised to meet Juliet Carrick (now living in north Wales) and her daughter Teegan near the summit of Snowdon, who were both much better equipped for sudden weather changes. Jo was glad of their presence when on their descent it unexpectedly turned from hot and sunny to foggy, cold, and rainy.

"Now then, Madge Russell," said Hilda Annersley, "you're back all the way from Canada and all you've talked about is babies. Honestly, anybody would think you and Joey hadn't already had about fifteen between you. Tell us about the last Blue Jays game."

"Why should I be the sensible, boring one just because I'm the eldest?" shouted Len as she stomped off to her room.

(Actual quote from friend's son this morning when his mother ticked him off for following his younger sister's example in a piece of mischief.)

"Because we aren't allowed nicknames, only shorts"

'What on earth makes you think I'd want to marry a doctor?' exclaimed Madge in surprise. 'I'm running a successful business in a foreign country, I've got plans to expand it, I've got my independence.....and you think I'll just throw all that away so that I can darn your socks?'

This was made a little harder by the subsequent arrival of her sisters Kingfisher and Peroni...

In the Third Form meanwhile, the twins Hendricks and Fevertree were the victims of their parents' very mis-placed sense of humour.
