"Sybil's a ridiculously long and girly name," Jo said to Madge. "I think you should shorten it to Bill."

Bill Russell, as she was known, was exquisitely pretty when she didn't look as though she'd been dragged through a hedge backwards. But she took very little interest in her appearance, and her sewing was the despair of Mademoiselle Lachenais.

Inspired by the thread about names of characters and how they influence us!

A long-retired Pam Slater watched the news with a wry grin, "Brexit" she mused "I did that years ago".

‘If only I knew what to do with you girls!’ said Dick in worried tones.

‘Oh, you needn’t worry about us!’ replied Madge. 'I've accepted a marriage proposal from a sugar daddy called James H Kettlewell. He's then going to finance Mademoiselle to set up a boarding school in Austria, and she'll take Joey.'

"This year we're doing a non denominational winter singsong in lieu of a nativity play," announced the Head. "There's so many girls from different religions and of no faith that we can't be focused on only one approach."

'We must remember that Jo is not to be invited to sing. Her voice has really gone to pot now - more amalgam than gold.'

A certain edge when she spoke of Mrs Maynard, certainly, but, after all, not everyone could love Joey.

"And it'd be very shallow to give the best part to someone just because she's the prettiest girl in the school, when she struggles to learn lines and someone else'd manage much better."

Does anyone else think it was really hard on Marie that whenever someone says how pretty she was, someone else always remarks how much lovelier Wanda was? It speaks volumes for her good nature that she didn't wind up hating her sister!

And someone told Josette that neither she nor Ailie were a patch on Sybil. And Joey apparently gawped really obviously at Janie because she wasn't as pretty as Elizabeth and Anne. So rude!

"Why does Joey always have to have more Christmas lights than anyone else?" Jack groaned when the electricity bill arrived.

"Of course we're all going to fly to school, Mary-Lou," Hilda said briskly. "Think how impractical it would be to make that long journey by rail and ferry at the beginning and end of every term. It's hardly as if any of your families are short of money, is it?"

"Hilda, I'm afraid we've got a problem about getting everyone home for Christmas," Rosalie said anxiously. "The trains that I've booked have all been cancelled because of the rail strikes."

"Oh dear." Hilda looked worried. "Well, I suppose that just this once we could book airline tickets."

Rosalie shook her head. "The airport staff and the airline staff are going on strike as well."

"Better get postcards off to all the parents and guardians and let them know what's going on," Nell said practically. "I'll help you write them."

Rosalie shook her head again. "We can't. The post office staff are going on strike as well!"

Hilda reached for a bottle of wine.

"We really must start doing a health and safety checklist before outings," Miss Annersley announced to the staff. "We're lucky no-one's been killed yet - especially since we've come to Switzerland."

Joey heard the news and immediately rang Hilda. "Don't worry" she said airily, "Bring the school to us. Anna will be delighted".
