"At school, the aliens were beginning to settle down"

It was easier than it might have been in another school. Chalet girls were well-trained in not passing personal remarks about appearance, and Matron was unconcerned about numbers of eyes or antennae so long as beds were made to her standard and drawers were tidy; although she did wonder privately whether spineless jellyfish would ever make good CS girls.

(The first line appears in "New CS" Chapter VIII "The Feud Progresses")

"The parents mustn't find out about [insert disaster here]" said Miss Annersley firmly.
Miss Denny sighed. It was all very well being a mistress of forgery but 200 weekly letters home was a bit much. How she longed for the good old Tyrol days when there were only 30 pupils!

The only thing that made escort duty bearable for the mistresses was gin

This term the prefects decided on a Vicars & Tarts party as their Saturday entertainment

Matey is, as many of us have suspected, immortal. She's currently enjoying a good deal of success ghosting some of the more popular books and articles on de-cluttering, and is pleased to note that there are many readers out there who seem to prefer an even stricter approach than hers...

One morning at Plas Gwyn, Jack and Jo are reading their post.

"Oh dear, this is not good" Jack said "The County Council have bought the field between us and the Trelawneys so they can build some council houses"

Hilda to Nell, "Have you heard that they're building new houses in the village? I hope we'll get some new pupils."

Edited to add that I think that perhaps Hilda was less snobbish than EBD and she might actually have welcomed them.

Len Maynard was the most irresponsible girl ever to attend the school.

Joey threw her beret into the Tiernsee, « Hooray, I’m finished with school, life begins tomorrow! »

(Inspired by some of the antics of local school-leavers!)

After a terrible misunderstanding, Jack Maynard drowned after jumping into the Tiernsee thinking that Joey had accompanied her beret

The Chalet School specialised in teaching mountaineering, skiing and extreme sports. Delicate girls were not admitted as pupils.

As the liberal/progressive 1960s approached, Miss Annersley and some of the other long-time CS staff did finally understand that a) The prefects really could no longer act as near-autocrats in the traditional fashion and b) It could actually be quite easy for them to get too big for their boots.

By then, the Headmistress's judgement was slipping a little, though. Joey had talked her into the terrible appointment of Jack Lambert as Head Girl, who had an excessively high-and-mightly air like Mary-Lou did sometimes, but lacked most of Mary-Lou's good qualities. Jack made an awful mess of things, had to be replaced, and that changed the staff's views.

Joey (and me incidentally) "What on earth is this 'Love Island'?"

I've never actually watched it myself. But I'm pretty sure that EBD would disapprove.

Joey thought this description was apt - she had never come across a jollier chap!

The staff were concerned when Mary- Lou started a new fashion for hair styles. But they had to admit that all those shaven heads saved a great deal of time and hot water.
