"Jo, I am afraid that you will not be able to have a tea for the new girls this term." Miss Annersley said. "You need to have a DBS Check and complete a Safe Space course first." *

Thoroughly wronged by the girl's terrible singing the divine Apollo and the celestial Euterpe wreaked terrible revenge on the Chalet School.

After the long summer holiday it was a shock to see that Theodora had become Theodore after some expensive treatment in a Sanatorium. Not to mention the fact that instead of German, French and ENglish speaking days, the school was replacing them with Mandarin, Cantonese and Ancient Babylonian...

"Anna, we are going to the Tiernsee this summer" Jo said "So you could come with us as your holiday"

"Nein" Anna snorted "That is no holiday for me as I end up doing all the housework, cleaning and childcare. So Karen and I are off to Benidorm for 2 weeks for a proper break."

'Joey, Joey, come quickly. That imp of a middle Blatanta DeVice has sneaked out and gone skating on the ice.'

'Oh no, Simone. Blatanta has been here long enough to know what always happens on these ocassions. The ice is bound to crack and she'll fall through. I'll have to jump in after her and nearly die making an heroic rescue.'

'Yes, my Jo, you will need to spend three weeks recovering in the San and we'll all think you're going to die. I've got my hankies sorted and ready to go, The Robin has been put on constant prayer vigil and I've told Cornelia that since this is the serious bit she won't be needed for two chapters, but she'll be along after that to superglue your hairbrush.'

'Brilliant Simone. After so many mountain rescues, Alpine storms and cracked ice incidents, we've really got our procedures down pat. What really annoys me though, is that I'll be in the San during rehearsals for the Easter play and I'll lose my role to a junior. I don't mind nearly dying, but that does piss me off.'

'Don't say "pisses" Jo. It's slang.'

"My name's Cecilia Marya," snapped the owner of the name. "Stop calling me Robin."

"At least we don't have to worry about all this panic-buying," Rosalie remarked as she made out the school's latest order. "Not having toilets can be a very good thing sometimes."

It's happening where you are, too? Australia (or at least the eastern part, I'm in the west and haven't noticed anything) has gone bonkers over buying loo paper. Somebody I know who works in retail in Germany said that it was happening there, as well.

It had been fairly calm here, but all the pictures on TV and the internet of panic-buying in Australia have now got people here worrying as well!

I'm in Hamburg at the moment and it doesn't seem to be a problem here. But it was definitely an issue when I went shopping in the UK over the weekend. It will probably get worse as I only live about 10 miles from Reading which has the first UK fatality.

"You can't expect me to home school all these children," Joey howled. "Where's Anna?"

"She's volunteered to cook free meals for all the staff at the San. Jem's paying," Jack said, pulling on his coat. "We're just off now. Bye! And make sure Bruno understands about social distancing."

“Hello Vic – had good hols?”
Victoria Adelaide Ann Cleopatra Larkin turned round to see who had hailed her.
“Oh, hello Cecil – oh, yes, just perfick, as my father would say. And I’ve brought our twins back with me to start the term - Zinnia June Florence Nightingale and Petunia June Florence Nightingale.”
Cecil smiled at the excited Larkin twins, who were chanting “Twins are best!” “Twins to win!” and said
“Maybe I’d better teach you the French and German for that.”

Nell Wilson squinted crossly at the machine in front of her. She used her mouse to click on the microphone icon.

"Right," she said angrily, "The next middle to mute me during this online lesson will..."

With an evil grin on her face Jocelyn Marvell muted Miss Wilson.

*Speaking from experience of my first online lesson with year 8, I now know how to change the settings so they can't mute me.

For once, Miss Annersley was really annoyed with Jo, on one of her regular visits to the school for a chat.

Because recently the ball had landed in a pile of dogshit on the cricket pitch during a game, and she knew it could only have been Bruno (it didn't help that the head was generally stressed, because several staff were off with flu).

"Can't you remember to clean up after that blasted dog, their shit is very toxic and potentially dangerous you know. Maybe get it properly trained so it doesn't always leap on people, as well?"

Jo was stunned, this was so out of character for Hilda, and was a bit hurt. Jo knew she had done wrong, but could not bring herself to apologise. All she said, defensively, was:

"He's a gorgeous dog, so friendly and never means any harm to anyone"

"I disagree, Rufus was far better" said the head frankly.

"If you're not prepared to own up, then get out!" she said, regarding her like a schoolgirl again.

Jo slammed the door, and for a long time avoided the school altogether and walked Bruno elsewhere. She finally realised that a more distant relationship with the school might be a good idea anyway.

(I've never understood why Jack thinks family holidays are such a strain for him and Joey when Anna does all the backbreaking work!)

In related news, after a meeting with a trades union rep, Anna was able to take early retirement with the backdated holiday pay the Maynards were forced to cough up.
