inspired by Alison H's comment on the Whinging thread. Pleased to hear that it has now been sorted, Alison.

Miss Annersley before going off to take morning prayers: "Rosalie, please could you ring the San and make an appointment for me? My headaches have been getting worse recently."

Rosalie before Abendessen: "Sorry, Hilda. I haven't been able to make that appointment for you. The San phone has been engaged all day except on one occasion when I managed to get though and then there was a recorded message telling me to phone back later."

Madge to Nell: "I agree with you that we need to bring St Mildred's up-to-date. What vocational courses were you thinking of introducing?"

Nell: "How about HGV driving, with tanker driving as a speciality? Or butchering? I was also thinking that we might send some girls to do seasonal works experence. Perhaps helping on a turkey farm before Christmas or picking fruit and vegetables in the summer term?"

Sorry about these but there is an element of Schadenfreude in them since I am in the fortunate position of not being affected by the current problems. Hope the situation improves for all you UK-based people soon.

It really is amazing how they only have to ring the San and someone comes rushing over, even though they're supposed to be both doing groundbreaking research and treating seriously ill TB patients!

"Oh, for heaven's sake," Jem said frustratedly. "I'm trying to run a world leading medical centre here: am I supposed to leave everything just because one of the girls stood in a puddle?"

Jo persuaded Jack that it would be a good idea if he drew up a rota of doctors to attend the CS patients. It was just a coincidence that all the doctors concerned were bachelors but, after all, he shrugged, where else were the poor women going to find decent husbands on the Platz?

"Er... I'm from Egypt" said Dr Al Amin.

Alternatively:

"It depends" said Dr Green (preferred pronouns they/them)

In 2019, Glendower House and the Tanswick school got together and planned a big celebration in Summer term 2020, for 95 years of the Chalet School. With some parties, as well as more serious and solemn speeches, memorials, etc. The events were to be spread across both schools, and many staff and pupils were looking forward to them.

They did still jointly produce a special book and special editions of the Chaletian (which it was called in both), a DVD with various historical footage, and some T-Shirts. But the onset of the Covid pandemic and all that went with it, unfortunately meant that everything else had to be cancelled. Of course they still hoped to be able to do it properly at some point. (This is assuming the Chalet School was founded in 1925)

Um...surely Tanswick was closed when it merged with the CS in Bride?

(It's also not very clear whether Tanswick was part of THE Chalet School - it seems unlikely in that its ethos was completely different and I can't imagine Madge et al. permitting that - or another school named, however unlikely it may seem, the Chalet School)

Tanswick was a separate school, coincidentally also called The Chalet school but no connection, also coincidentally having a Head called Miss Wilson, and having uniform with similar colours in reverse - orange tunics! When it closed a number of the pupils joined the Chalet School

Presumably no copyright in school names, but quite possibly it opened when the CS was still in Austria, so they were first in England or Wales with the name. They might have been quite miffed when another school with their name turned up at St Briavels! Don’t know how near they were, think all we know about Tanswick is that it is in South Wales

Oh yes sorry, i'm just talking alternate history here! Should have mentioned that. It's what I've specialised in really, in my drabbles. They're probably not of interest to that many people, being far or very far indeed from canon. But I write mainly for my own interest. Nice if they get read of course, but I'm not bothered.

I'm sure it says (in Wrong maybe), that Tanswick is a seaside town further along the coast. In my Tessa drabble (where yes, it opened while the CS was still in Austria), I put it right up NE of Fishguard, after looking at a road atlas. With St Briavels/nearby islands being at the extreme SW corner of Pembrokeshire. An alternative to the view that Tenby = Carnbach. Have never seen the Tanswick head named Miss Wilson, I thought she remained nameless.

I like to think the Tanswick school might have survived, that both schools could have been honoured to have an imitator, while accepting each others' differences in ethos. My school, rather shit as it was IMO, basically began as an offshoot of Gordonstoun. It was heavily based on it. As for copyrighting school names, like Ivohenry said, i think not. I know nothing about law, maybe the CS could have trademarked it, probably not. But if so, it would have made them look a bit petty maybe.

In Wrong Chalet School, when Aunt Luce visits the school and it all gets sorted out, one of the things she says is that Katherine’s mother’s friend Miss Wilson had been at Tanswick but had now left. Also just looked at the beginning and it says Tanswick is in Pembrokeshire.

At Glendower House in 2015 one summer term Saturday, Tallulah Cowden, the head girl, tried to curtsey (in the still very strong tradition) to the headmistress, Mrs Hollis in her room, when meeting her and the deputy HG, Jenna Povey, to inspect progress on construction of the new music school with some of the school's governors.

Unfortunately, she had foolishly got more drunk than planned the previous night, on some potent smuggled-in vodka, lemonade and red wine, to celebrate a friend's birthday. Jenna did a perfect curtsey, but Tallulah (who was, like Jenna, in uniform) slipped and fell head-over-heels on the carpet. The head had to laugh as did Jenna, both privately wondered if alcohol had been involved because Tallulah seemed unsteady on her feet.

"Honestly, Tallulah, that is not what I expect of my head girl! Go to the splashery and wake yourself up with some cold water on your face, before you continue. I'll make you a black coffee if you want"

Tallulah gladly accepted both. In the splashery, she suddenly threw up heavily in a lavatory. Before she returned to the head's room, gulped down the coffee, and carried on as best she could.

A modern Gwensi, Gwensi Horan, not related to Gwensi Howell, was prefect of tidiness and the environment at Glendower House in 1994, responsible for things such as organising drinks can crushing for recycling. She had less of the original Gwensi's strictness in general, but woe betide any girl whom she caught littering!

One day, she was asked by the deputy head, who was Miss Emilia Bettany (a daughter of Len), to lead a party of the strongest girls. In order to remove an unsightly pile of old fridges dumped behind the san in the grounds, and put them in a skip.

(I was, rather oddly, once part of a fridge removal party at school, a load of them were dumped in a hollow in the woods near our san. Can crushing was an important thing, organised by the school community service)

Lavender Leigh as a prefect at Plas Howell: ”You really must not run in the corridors, one of our strictest rules. Take an order mark.”

Isabella Endacott (a junior): There are so many rules here! What's wrong with that anyway?

Lavender: The school is not a democracy! Though we don't have a lot of rules actually. And come on Izzy, surely you can see it's dangerous to run.

Isabella: Oh well Lavender, apologies. I suppose you're right.

(I don't think EBD would have written such an encounter quite like that)

Miss Annersley to Katharine Gordon:

"I'm really sorry about this, Katharine, though your absent-minded Aunt Luce is ultimately to blame. You can stay here for a week or two, but I have just got a telegram to say Mary Katharine Gordon is coming next term, once she's seen a bit of America. The school is full to bursting and oversubscribed, unfortunately there just isn't the space we had at Plas Howell. You will have to get your aunt to transfer you to Tanswick."

(I maybe regret not having Katharine be a Tanswick pupil instead, in my alternate history drabble. Could also have said that Aunt Luce was having a rare lucid moment and didn't mix up. Though if i ever get round to it, would like to introduce Mary Katharine somehow.)

"Pam Slater was right: we should have stayed in Armishire," growled Nancy Wilmot, as the Chalet School party's wait to board a ferry at Dover entered its third hour.
