I've recently returned from a road trip, one of the high points of which was the lovely Achensee. I know that many CBB members have been there and that some are regular visitors, but for those who have yet to get there, I have taken the liberty of making a little album on a photo sharing website which this link should take you to. I managed to delete a couple of the captions but you will see that those are just Pertisau village scenes and the boathouse which might have been THE boathouse!
I might add a few minor updates this week to the information already available. I hope you will enjoy the snaps.
ETA I had tried to do a sort of story but this website is a bit awkward if you just have the free version so I gave up. best to just click on the individual pics.

Lovely photos. I've never been to the Achensee so it was wonderful to see it. No photo of the Alpenhof, possible Chalet School inspiration? I gather it is in a state of disrepair.

I didn't do a thorough exploration as I was only there for three full days, two of which were taken up by quite long walks and the third by a trip to Jenbach and Innsbruck. Quite a variety of weather, though!

Glad you got back home safe and sound! I hope the rest of the journey wasn't as traumatic as the one from Oberaudorf!

Pertisau really is in a spectacular setting and your pics are lovely. I see you made it to the Dripping Rock which performed much better for you than it did for me - it was damp rather than dripping when I saw it.

Whilst the position of the Alpenhof may work for the school, I have always thought it most unlikely that EBD based the CS in that particular building. I don't think it bears any resemblance at all to anything she describes during the Tyrol books....

I have to confess to not liking Jenbach at all; it had a very strange and uncomfortable feel to it for me.

I rather liked Jenbach, although my view might be coloured by the fact that Mrs G found a very nice charity shop with lovely staff. They were having a 'Trachten' week, and she bought an almost new Spieth und Wensky wool and suede jacket lined in red gingham for €39, about a quarter of the list price, and an unused suede shoulder bag with pewter trim for €18! Also, I had a massive slab of Leberkäse (it must have weighed nearly a pound!) in a bun for €1.40 from the excellent M-Preis supermarket cafe. What's not to like?

You've got me curious now. If there's a fine day next week, I may take myself off to Jenbach to see for myself.

I did find a nice craft shop there Annied....

I couldn't pin down at all what it was that made me uneasy. I have been in many small Austrian towns and none have had that effect on me!

Well, I can't imagine how I survived half a week without knowing all those statistics! Depth of lake, height of Maurach above sea level, length of zipwire! Nice bit of film though, and I wish I was back there again!

Thank you so much for those pics, Gottfried. I've never been, and never will be able to go, but it's lovely to see the Dripping Rock especially. Glad you had such a good time.

Now I definitely have to go, craft shops AND charity shops, what a temptation!

I also really want to try out that zip wire thingy on the video clip when I'm next in Pertisau although I have a suspicious feeling that whoever I happen to be with might not be so enthusiastic! (I say this based on the horrified reactions I've had when I've mentioned wanting to give tandem paragliding a try.)

There is a fixed set of questions both Czechs and Germans ask when they visit your home for the first time:
1) Population of village/town
2) Which way does your house face?
3) What is the height above sea level?
4) What is the size of your home in square metres?

I can never answer any of them but assume that all Czechs and Germans (and now, it appears, Austrians) come automatically armed with that information....

Annied, you look quite civilised at first glance. Nobody would dream that you are really a daredevil adrenaline junkie. I bet that rain cover outside your flat hides a rip-snorting trail bike!

I surprise myself sometimes! I think I may have found someone prepared to go tandem paragliding with me, although it'll have to wait until next Spring now, weather permitting.

I'm not nearly so intrepid when it comes to cycling. I hadn't ridden a bike for around 40 years when I got the electric ones. No one mentions that the only thing that comes back is riding in a straight line on a wide, even, traffic free road. It took me about a year before I was able to unclamp a white knuckled hand to signal! At least I don't stop and dismount when someone's coming from the opposite direction along the cyclepaths any longer though. I've even managed a few left turns since I got the rear view mirror. (I wonder if there's such a thing as a rip-snorting electric trail bike?)
