Does anyone, by any happy chance, happen to know in which book Cornelia gets confused between simile and simnel cake because she isn't concentrating? I know there's another episode in which she writes about Guide stuff in a history essay, but I think that was at a different time. Thanks!

I know the Guide/history essay bit is in And Jo, I remember it from last week, but there was no mention of simnel/similie at the same time. I haven't come across it in any of the books I've done discussion threads for so far, so it must be post Camp, if that helps. :)

Is it this quote about Jo in Jo of? Thank you for the interpretation! I had no idea there was actual logic to this statement: nice to know there's a real cake with a name similar to "simile."
Quote:
It is to be feared that very little sense was to be got out of the younger Miss Bettany during that period. She listened blandly to Miss Durrant on the subject of similes and metaphors, and when invited to show how much she had learnt by explaining what a simile was, absently murmured something about ‘a cake eaten in Lent in Yorkshire’—an answer that created quite a sensation.

That's the one! Thank you :D . I don't know why EBD said Yorkshire because you get it all over the country. Very nice but full of calories! Nor do I know why I thought it was Cornelia!

Thank you!

The Guide stuff is in and Jo:

Quote:
It was left to Cornelia to break the record. Her history exercise, when Miss Stewart (known to the girls as ‘Charlie’) came to correct it, was a weird mixture of the reign of Elizabeth and Guidework. Part of it ran like this:
‘Elizabeth was very vain, and keen on Morse. If we work hard, we may get it. Two famous gentlemen at her court were Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake, who sailed round the world, though he knew nothing about wireless. He could not signal if anything happened to him. If Sir Walter Raleigh had known about wireless, he could have told the people in England all about how he was bringing home tobacco, and then his servant would not have thrown water over him, and thought he was burning. You ought not to do this. When a person is on fire, roll them in a rug after you have knocked them down first.’
