I wonder if this is the school that EBD had in mind where Anne Chester sent Beth to before the Chalet School moved to Guernsey (hideous sentence, I am sorry). I don't have the book to hand (currently at work) but I think it was a private school, and this is a grammar, but according to it's history it would certainly have been on the island at the time.

The Girls' Grammar school would have been fee-paying at that time, with a fair number of scholarships, but the description in the book sounds more like a small private school.

Interesting to see that the Boys' School moved in with Oldham Hulme during the war, and that the girls' school was evacuated to Rochdale. A lot of evacuees from Guernsey ended up round here - especially in Stockport, I think, but also in Oldham, Rochdale and Bury.

ETA - I really need to write a drabble in which the Chalet School is evacuated to Lancashire ...

Sorry for dragging this off the point  . To get back to Guernsey Grammar, EBD's usually quite keen on grammar schools, but presumably none of them could possibly have competed with the Chalet School!

Just checked Janie steps in -

"Beth goes to a private school in Peterport. It gives quite a decent education for very little"

So definitely not the Grammar School.
