Further to previous posts about internet traumas, BT Man is coming tomorrow. I've got a horrible feeling that the problem is as much to do with my computer (which runs slow generally) as the hub being old, and that I'm then going to have to try to get someone in to try to sort that, but one thing at a time. Being someone with a history of anxiety disorder, I'm quite convinced that it's all going to go wrong - BT engineers always seem to rush rush rush - so please cross fingers that it doesn't. I've already had a load of hassle because they insisted that the new hub, which for some unfathomable reason was sent by post rather than being brought by the engineer, would go through the letterbox, and of course it didn't!

When we changed ISP we were assured that the new router would go through the letterbox - which of course it didn't! though thankfully we were in at the time it arrived. [benefit of being retired!]

I am SO tired. Ma asked today if I'd considered that I might have post-viral fatigue after the quinsy. Which is a :shock:

BT Man has been. The internet is still running slowly on the desktop

, but I was half-expecting that as everything seems to be running slowly on it ... now need to find a computer repair person. However, everything else connected to the new hub OK (touch wood!!).

Frightened to say this in case I tempt fate, but Computer Man has now been, and, fingers crossed, the situation has improved. He reckoned that a Windows update had gone wrong :banghead:

I am having a horrible day. Had to take the car to the garage in York for 8am, which meant an earlier start than a workday, after not a lot of sleep, because my insomnia is pretty bad at the moment. Started a heavy cold at around 9am, so I feel dreadful, I can't breathe properly, and I just want to go to bed with a good book, but the garage rang and one of my back brakes is knackered, which means the service is going to cost £400 more than I expected (and about £200 more than I can really afford), and I'm stuck in the centre of town for at least another three hours. Hopefully there will be a nice peaceful corner in Starbucks where I can cry quietly, but given the weather I doubt it.

Well, let's hope that that's all your bad stuff for some time in one foul swoop, as a colleague used to say!

I can relate to the sleep deprivation, as the kittens are still playing havoc with mine - yesterday morning between SLOC's hospital appointment and the weekly shop I felt quite rough but much better after I'd had twenty minutes TM (transcendental meditation). I have heard it suggested for insomnia, but prefer to keep it for times such as I've just mentioned, and play mind games if I can't get to sleep (words ending 'city' for example, or CS characters - any kind of list that is familiar but will keep your brain ticking over gently). Might either of those help?

Thankfully am feeling slightly better since I managed to bag the only sofa in Costa and am thus at least able to lean back and keep my head almost horizontal.

I do use the list technique sometimes, Noreen--episodes of 'Waking the Dead' and 'Doctor Who', usually. Unfortunately, it doesn't tend to work on consecutive nights as my brain gets bored of the same lists. Will have to look into the meditation; thank you for the tip. I hope the kittens settle down and let you sleep soon!

ETA: And car is ready forty minutes earlier than expected! (Presumably having passed MOT!) This is excellent news as I had just run out of reading matter light enough to hold up over my head.

When I'm having an insomnia night I play a Youtube relaxation video on my phone. None in particular, I just choose whatever seems suitable. They didn't work initially, but once I got into the habit it got a lot easier, and eventually I got to the point where just the music alone is enough to make me feel calmer and sleepier.

Thank you for the tip, Finn. I'm not sure YouTube would work for me because it would probably kill my phone battery, and I rely on that phone for two of the three alarms it takes to get me up in time for work in the morning. But I do have a couple of short playlists of soothing music on another device which sometimes work, or at the very least put me into a meditative mood instead of a restless one, if they don't send me to sleep. Sometimes that's the best I can hope for.

Yes - you could always download some spoken meditations onto your mp3, or the other thing I do is have my phone on its charger by the bed (I also rely on phone alarms!). Alternatively there are specific relaxation techniques you could memorise, but personally I find having someone telling me what to do more effective - probably because I have anxiety problems and my mind drifts very easily!

I'm another one who suffers from insomnia, it's worse over summer due to the light nights here.

I've used calm.com, which is an app type site but for computers (I think you can download a phone app too) so it won't drain your phone. I've used it sometimes for anxiety.

I don't know what I'd have done over the last few years were it not for phone apps and YouTube yoga and relaxation videos! Modern tech is wonderful sometimes :-)

I used to think I was reasonably intelligent but now I'm not so sure. In an attempt to find an easy way of teaching my daughter how to tie her shoelaces I came across the Ian knot. I've looked at the instructions here :

and watched his video and I just do not get that way at all. Seems so simple when you watch him do it but I just can't get the hang of it

I think I'll have to try some other method.

I used to be quite nimble with macrame in junior school but this has flummoxed even my husband who is an experienced sailor and has tied many a knot in his time.
