Following up on the thread in Special Sixth, I'd say that What Happened to Ros Lilley is one of the greatest mysteries (as opposed to EBD-isms like Herr Mensch coming back to life or why Amy Stevens was still at school when she must have been about 22) in Chalet School history. Another one is How Did Rolf Maynard Die, and a less important one is Who was Jean Mackenzie? What else would people nominate ?

Why was Jem able to speak Afrikaans to Mr Flower?

Why would there be other Chalet schools? (This one is named after the type of building which first housed it, but the other two named in 'Wrong'?)

Why does Juliet disappear?

Who is the mystery lady at the panto in a Swiss book (can't remember which) who Nell (I think) recognises but we are never told?

What is Simone's younger daughter really called, Anne-Claire or Marie Roseline?

I've always wondered who that lady was!

Also What Was Tom Gay's News?

In the CS in the Oberland when the Milles go to a concert, there is an elaborate tale about one of the musicians (the singer?) that suggests it will be expanded on (sorry don't have the book to hand)

I always assume the lady was a famous ballerina because she comments on the perfect line of the dancers of something like that. And maybe EBD had her in mind to come and teach Felicity later on.

And the Tom thing drives me MAD every time I read it. Just tell us, I practically scream. At the book. Which ignores me. :D

Another mystery, Vic Coles - male or female?

Cheers,
Joyce

Why was one of Jo's frocks hanging on the back of Jack's dressing room door in Joey Goes? (I mean, I can think of reasons why Jo might have wanted to disrobe in Jack's dressing room, but I'm not sure it's what EBD had in mind.)

When I first read the books, it never occurred to me that Vic Coles was anything but a boy. I knew a few Joan Bakers in my schooldays, although without the bullying, and they very much did get up to things with their own versions of Vic Coles.

It also lays the foundations for Mary Lou later saying that Joan talks about boys, which I've always thought must have been much more explicit talk than EBD could put in a children's book, hence ML's embarrassment. I mean, I don't suppose Joan and Vic stopped at holding hands while walking in the park.

What about that box belonging to Prof Richardson? Didn't it contain a notebook with writing that no-one could decipher?

Ah, now as a child it never occurred to me that Vic Coles was anything but a girl...I was a very innocent nine-year-old when I first read Problem. Now it seems quite obvious that there was hanky-panky, does EBD say they were eating chips out of newspaper behind the back of the shop, or have imagined it?
No mystery beats Jo's 'displaced organ' for me, I laugh every time I think of it.

It says something like "That Vic certainly was a hot 'un" . I forget the exact wording, but "hot 'un" is definitely in there. They were eating chips, and I think they might have been throwing them around as well, but it sounds like there was some serious snogging going on too. This was the '50s and I don't suppose they got up to anything beyond that, but, considering that Len and Reg got engaged without so much as going to the pictures together, it would have seemed very scandalous in CS-land.

I've always assumed Vic was a boy.

In one of the Tyrol books, it says that Cornelia was to know such mothering as she'd never known even from Mlle (and when Mlle "mothered" Corney is a mystery in itself), but we never find out from whom. I assume EBD was planning to pair millionaire Mr Flower up with some lucky CS lady and then forgot about it, but I'd like to know exactly what she meant.

I have just been reading this book and would love to know what happened to the singer. Was she going to be a nun?

Vic Coles - I always tought Vic was a boy, purely because of the name Vic. Victoria always got shortened to Vicky in my mind - plus there was a RL Victoria who was always known as 'Vixen' but I suspect that particular shortenening wouldn't fit too well into EBD land

Although there are a lot of boyish short names for girls in the Chalet School, so who knows?

What did *Miss* Denny do before the Chalet school?

Oh, and what happened to Miss Nalder's husband? There's got to be a juicy story there.

There was a letter he wrote to the 3Rs which couldn't be read, and I believe they couldn't get into the box. I do wonder what that was about. I bet he didn't go into space, but was in fact a spy for the USSR and had to defect rapidly, but chose to leave the box containing his diaries which would let his children know he was actually a double agent not a traitor, and the absent minded prof thing was all a ruse. Or something like that anyway...

I think displaced organs really did used to be a thing...(probably not as late as the 50s but EBD would have heard about them). I'm sure there was an operation known as 'hitching up the kidneys'.

How old were the Dawburns when they left school?

ETA, I also want to know the titles of all the banned books.
